Hong Kong, a city shaped by wave after wave of migration, carries within it a spirit of resilience and transformation. After beginning my own journey of relocation, I entered a period of deep self-exploration—facing the emotional and physical challenges of adapting to an entirely new environment.
My first winter as a new immigrant brought with it a disorienting cold that left my hands stiff, my thoughts sluggish, and my sense of belonging unsettled. Yet in my garden, I witnessed the quiet strength of plants continuing to grow through the frost. Their silent resilience moved me profoundly. I began a photographic exploration using flowers as my subject, sealing them in ice to preserve their fragile yet elegant forms. Surrounded by layers of ice and delicate bubbles, the frozen blooms became symbols of life held in stillness. This series, created during my second winter abroad, became more than an artistic study—it evolved into a meditative dialogue on adaptation and transformation. Through these frozen flowers, I hope to express how, even in moments of migration and uncertainty, we can discover strength and beauty.
From the earliest stages of this project, I envisioned patterns forming within the ice—like ice flakes —emerging as part of the work’s visual language. This concept shaped the structure of the artist book, which adopts a hexagonal form and concertina fold, allowing the photographs to unfold into a sculptural display. A second configuration offers an alternate way to experience the book—transforming from flat pages to a three-dimensional reading. The entire work is printed with pigment-based ink on fine art photographic paper, enriching the tonal depth and enhancing the tactile visual experience.
